Dyson DC62 vacuum cleaner: A powerful vacuum cleaner that’s perfect for busy mums!
These days, when it comes to cleaning the home, most of us rely on vacuum cleaners rather than the traditional method of sweeping with a broom and dustpan.

While searching for reviews on handheld vacuum cleaners recently, I was told not to settle for handheld models as these lacked the power needed to clean effectively. At the same time, I also knew that I didn’t want to have to lug a bulky vacuum cleaner with a long cord trailing behind while I attempted to clean my four-room flat thoroughly.
After much contemplation and reading more reviews online, I decided to give the Dyson DC62 handheld vacuum cleaner a try.
The Dyson DC62 vacuum cleaner promise
The first thing that attracted me towards the Dyson DC62 vacuum cleaner was the promise that this handheld unit would work just as well as a corded vacuum cleaner in terms of cleaning power.
The heart of the Dyson DC62 vacuum cleaner lies within the digital V6 motor.
The Dyson DC62’s high cleaning power is made possible by the digital V6 motor, which sits at the heart of the cordless vacuum cleaner. The V6 motor spins at 110,000rmp, which is five times faster than a formula one car engine.
Tested to last up to 38,000 hours of usage, you can use the Dyson DC62 vacuum cleaner everyday for four years, 24 hours a day! So, if you use it a few hours a week, you can bet that it will last you longer than four years.
On top of that, the Dyson DC62 vacuum cleaner also comes with 15 cyclones that work in parallel across two tiers. This feature ensures that the air flow throughout the cyclone pack is equal so that fine dust and dirt do not escape from the unit and get recirculated in the air.
Weight
Weighing a mere 2kg, the Dyson DC62 weighs less than a healthy new born baby and handling it is a breeze!
The Dyson DC62 comes with a long, purple aluminium wand and weighs a mere two kilograms. This makes the unit easy to manoeuvre – especially around tight spaces – that even your older kids can help out with vacuuming the floors.
Combining powerful cleaning with beautiful design, you’d want to take great care of your Dyson vacuum cleaner. Do be careful not to bash the wand against hard surfaces too often as it can result in scuff marks.

Noise
My little one wanted to have a go at vacuuming the floor.
For such a small and lightweight vacuum cleaner, the DC62 packs quite a punch! With such high power to make cleaning a breeze, the DC62 operates at around 72dB – so you can expect some light whizzing sound when it is turned on. Although this didn’t cause my neighbour’s dog to start barking, it did startle my two-year-old for a minute – after which she became curious about the new household gadget and even gave it a go (what more could a mum ask for!).
Battery
The Dyson DC62 vacuum cleaner takes up to 3.5 hours for a full charge.
Once fully charged, the Dyson D62’s battery can run for up to 20 minutes, and 16 minutes with the motorised head.
Due to the powerful suction and ease of manoeuvrability, surprisingly the 20 minutes run time was enough to do a quick clean of my four-room flat. With kids running around at home, the DC62 is the ideal tool to keep a busy household organised. Although a cordless vacuum cleaner like the DC62 makes daily clean-ups a breeze, larger homes may benefit from the use of a full-sized machine for a more thorough clean.
For heavy-duty cleaning such as muddy finger prints or stubborn dirt and stains, you can opt to run the Dyson DC62 on boost mode – but do take note that this will only last for six minutes. I also noticed that the machine generated some heat during use. While it did cause the handle to feel warm, it didn’t cause any alarm.
Hold the “Max” button to clean in boost mode. This feature comes in handy for cleaning up chunky items off the floor.
Once the battery goes flat, it takes three-and-a-half hours for the machine to fully charge. But with a docking and charging station which can be fixed to the wall, the machine is often fully charged and ready to go.
Cleaning power
The Dyson DC62 is extremely powerful, and it really lives up to its reputation of being just as effective as a corded vacuum cleaner.
I put this handheld vacuum cleaner to the test with a melange of items that my toddler would typically spill: Cheerios, oats, powder, and rice. On normal mode, the smaller items got sucked up pretty easily, while the boost mode came in handy when it came to chunkier items.

Thanks to the powerful suction, the DC62 is also extremely adept in picking up dust in crevices between floor boards and tight corners. So you don’t ever need get down on the floor to tackle those tough spots.
Accessories
The Dyson DC62 comes with six different cleaning heads that are suited for a variety of surfaces and in-between tight corners. The main motorhead comes equipped with carbon fibre antistatic bristles that effectively sucks up dust and dirt particles on all surfaces, including hard floors and carpets.
It’s also really easy to transform the DC62 to meet all your cleaning needs at home. To clean your air cond vents or cobwebs on the wall, you’ll just need to change to a slimmer cleaning head and flick the machine towards the targeted areas. Cleaning your car with the DC62 is also super easy: you can either do it with just the motorised head or take the whole unit with you with the crevice tool to suck up dust and crumbs in the creases of the car seat and baby seat.
The vacuum cleaner comes with six cleaning tools to help you clean almost every possible surface and angle in your home.
But the one cleaning head that you should absolutely try is the mattress tool. Bet you’ve never realised how dirty our mattresses can get, with dead skin cells and dust mites lingering on the surface! That is why it is important to vacuum the mattress regularly in the same way as we change the bed sheets.
This is where the DC62’s mattress tool comes in, by removing allergens and dust mites from your mattress and couch. This handy tool works well when it comes to dusting curtains, too.

Assembly and clean-up
Assembling the Dyson DC62 is really easy.
Putting together the Dyson DC62 cordless vacuum cleaner is a breeze. All you need to do is to look for the grooved design on the parts and snap it together in place.
As for cleaning the dirt bin, I was happy to see that this could be done quickly as well. Just click the red button located against the bin, and the cover will pop up instantly to empty the bin easily. You can either dispose the dirt from the bin directly into a trash can, or line the trash can with an old plastic bag and dispose this immediately.

Once done, click the red button again to fully remove the bin from the machine and wipe it clean. It is recommended that the dirt bin is wiped down with a wet cloth (DO NOT rinse it with water as this will seep into the motor), while the filter should be washed at least once a month.
Size
The entire makeup of the Dyson DC62 cordless vacuum cleaner is so sleek and compact that you won’t have a problem stowing it away even in tight spaces. But with such a sleek design for a handheld vacuum, it’d be such a waste to just keep it hidden in a dark corner. I’m sure, like me, most mums would proudly display the DC62 and show it to friends who would pop by for a visit.
The Dyson DC62 fits in nicely in between my washing machine and dryer.
You can also choose to install the docking station onto the wall to secure the unit for charging. But make sure to choose a spot that is out of reach from your kids’ prying fingers.
